“Having been born in the Melbourne 1950s, speed of change in our city happened slowly and then, in the 70’s, the old city began to disappear and a whole change took over where ugly architecture, predominantly in bland repititious brick, replaced the marvelous old building of the 1850s, which were stunning works of art and artisan craftwork, but commercially dysfunctional. Then in the 1990s, a whirlwind of development overtook the city and sky-cranes were peppering the skyline and our city sprouted tall pencil-thin glass and metal erectiles.”

“Our city, always changing: its light and ever-moving shadows, a spectrum of colours, stunning materials, its great mass, a volume of form and sound, a thickness, yes a thickness mushrooming and our population mixing its cultural colourings and ever-increasing count. This is what makes the city never repeat itself as a visual form.”
